It seems that Congress is once again considering the Orphan Works act. This would change the existing copyright laws to expand what is to be considered an "orphaned work" . An orphaned work is a work of art where the copyright has lapsed because of either on purpose, because of the passage of time or lack of proper registration. It can then be used without your permission for any purpose. Up until now, this has been mostly work where because the artist has passed away and their estate has allowed the copyright to become public domain.

Changes would be to expend this to work by living artists! Artwork that is not registered with the copyright office or with newly created private "copyright registries" will be considered "orphaned" and free for anyone to use. Copyright violators can get exception from infringement suits if they claim to have made a "reasonably diligent search" for the copyright holder.

This is something that would adversely affect every artist currently working today. Artists would have to spend hundreds if not thousands, of dollars each year to register their own work. And this would not even guarantee the same level of legal protection we have today. It would effectively gut any copyright protection we have.

Here are some links to blogs explaining it in more detail.

Hi there, my name is Jim Courtney and I work for a print shop in Livermore. We get a lot of art from clients and their designers; which we have to make ready for our Flexo or Offset presses. In some cases, that is not as easy as it should be. The primary software used is Adobe Illustrator. I kind of thought up this Pop Quiz for people to test their knowledge of illustrator and printing. I based the questions on some of the things we run into on a regular basis. I'll be posting the answers to this quiz Monday. Enjoy.

1. What is the difference between an overprint and a knock-out and where do you go to set either setting to a shape?

2. What has the greater range of color, RGB or CYMK.

3. Where is the Find and Replace in Illustrator 10, where is it in CS2?

4. What is the difference between Pantone C and U colors?

5 You have a Red circle on a Yellow background. Both colors are spot colors. What would be the best way to manually trap these colors?

6. You have to design a company logo in three colors. It is important that it print consistently through out all their marketing materials. You can be reasonably sure of that if you choose to...
A. Use Pantone Spot Colors for your color choices?
B. Be sure to supply the correct CYMK values used for each color?
C. Give them a color print out to match from your printer?

7. What is the difference between a spot color swatch and a global color swatch in Illustrator? How are they similar?

8. How do you make a clipping path in Illustrator. (extra point if you can know the keyboard shortcut).

9. You want to save an Illustrator file to send to a printer for separations. What vector format will work best, PDF or EPS?

Is it possible to export to Illustrator as a smart object and keep the emboss effect? Or even better would be to save it in some vector format so I could work with it in InDesign CS2.

I'm getting confused by file formats and switching back and forth between programs. What's the best way to keep it as a vector illustration but keep the emboss effect while using it in InDesign or Illustrator? Is this even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for cross posting.
Thanks,
Jason

I learned how to use the basics of Illustrator about 10 years ago and have worked with it in a pretty simple way since then. Recently I'm exploring much more complex and advanced pieces using Illustrator and I'm finding that there's a lot more I can do with it, and a LOT more to learn!
I'm hoping you more experienced users can guide me in times of trouble.

For instance - the piece I'm working on now has a sh*tload of objects and it's started acting wierd when refreshing, or when I copy and paste bits.

I've read the "reduce file size" thread below, and will give those tips a try.

I'd also appreciate any ideas for how to setup, organize and keep things tidy as you go along.
Thanks!

I usually design for the web, so I am still new to the process of preparing documents for print.

In Illustrator, what would be the best way to design it? (i.e. six separate files that are 8.5 x 4.66 or one giant file that is 8.5 x 28?) It doesn't matter to me, but I want it to be easy for the post-production guy to print.

Since it is a CMYK job, it isnt that big a deal on what Pantone pallette I use, right? I was assuming I should use pantone uncoated process. (since it is going on a non-glossy paper)

Sorry if these questions are stupid...I'm still learning...

I can't find "make clipping path" in either program, though I know I used to use it in Photoshop before I used InDesign. Will this work? When I bring the image into Illustrator, I can see through the white box by putting it on "Multiply" but the the other elements in the background show through. What am I missing here? And will importing it with a clipping path work?
I'm finally using Illustrator CS for paying work/doing logos and I'm working on a logo that I am sort of hand-lettering (in Illustrator) and I have a question.

I am using the pen tool and I can't quite get the exact curve I want. It's for the curve of an "R." I cannot get the place where the curve joins the straight line to smooth out entirely. These are tow speapate lines, one curved and one straight, and I want them to join in a slight curve. Is there a way to join them so there's a smooth connection without a little corner on the outside? I've tried different endpoints and tried to make a "compound path" (which I still can't find anything that explains it) and I tired to "simplify" it and nothing works. I want it to go straight, then curve, then curve, then go straight again, (thus the curved portion of the "R". I am confused.

I also have a pretty wobbly-looking "S" that is close to a nice "S" and I want it to sort of snap into being a smooth "S" and I know it must do this but I don't know how to tell it to do this. I tried the "smooth" tool but nothing happens.
In photoshop I know you can use the eyedropper to pick up a color that is already in the image. In Illustrator the eyedrop tool only seems to work that way on things you actually made in in illustrator. When you bring in a bitmap image it doesn't allow me to use the eyedrop tool because there is no stroke or fill. Is there a way to do this in Illustrator? Matching the colors by eye is somewhat feasible but I can't tell if I am getting an exact match. I would like it to be seamless. Thank you for your advice as I am still pretty new to this program.

Adobe has today announced plans to purchase Macromedia for an all-stock transaction worth $3.4 Billion.

Macromedia shareholders will receive 69% a share of Adobe for each one they hold, which represents approx. $41.86 per share at Adobe's closing price of $60.66. The figure represents a 25% premium on Macromedia's shares, which closed at $33.45 on Friday.

The deal, approved by both boards, is being described as a way of expanding both the companies. Bruce Chizen, Adobe CEO, described the purchase as being "all about growth," and explained that he expects the two companies together to grow faster than they would apart. “By combining our powerful development, authoring and collaboration software – along with the complementary functionality of PDF and Flash – Adobe has the opportunity to bring this vision to life with an industry-defining technology platform.” Although true, the deal reflects the increased competition both companies are facing in their respective markets.

Adobe and Macromedia are respected leaders in their fields, and a tie up in the industry has long been expected by analysts. Adobe is a leader in the imaging and document management field, and Macromedia is a leader of web technologies like Flash. The deal has been welcomed by industry watchers.

Although details are somewhat limited, the two companies announced that they believed the purchase would give cost savings. However, as recent history with purchases such HP and Compaq would tell, there are serious difficulties and costs involved in integrating two companies.

Chizen will stay in his position as CEO of Adobe, whilst Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Macromedia, will become president of Worldwide Field Operations in the new combined company. The deal is expected to be completed later this year.
