gradient inside text

I cant figure it out. Do I need to convert text to an object? Im using cs 3

    No I still think you need to convert type into outlines and then add the gradient. (Of course then you lose any editing ability.)

    One work around is to select and copy your live text and hide it, Then paste in the copy and change that to outlines for the gradient. Not a terrible smooth way to work but it does allow you to still have the type in a live form in you document, in case you need to make change to it later.
