I'm working on a complex piece with lots of objects. I'm building another complex bit for it and noticed that the big file was really slow at responding and refreshing, so I thought I'd be clever and build this new element in a seperate, pristine file, then copy and paste it into the big file when finished. But now, when I try to paste it back into the big file, Illustrator hangs up and ends up "Not Responding".
I even tried pasting this new object into a New file and it still crashed when I tried to paste.
:P
Any clue as to how to cope with this problem?
Thanks!

Re: Crashing when pasting - Help!
Sat, May 19, 2007 - 8:07 PMTo me it sounds a lot like a RAM problem. Though Illustrator isn't as much of a RAM hog like Photoshop, it still needs a decent amount to work properly. The hang up could be that when you are jumping back into the bigger file, you are needing more RAM than is available and that is why it is hanging up.
Another reason is if you are still trying to work with Illustrator 10 in Mac OSX. That mean that Illustrator is running in 'classic' mode (System 9) while the rest of your computer is running in OSX. Apple made early versions of OSX able to do this so that it can older versions of programs not written for OSX. The problem to this is that OSX and System 9 were set up to handle memory differently. So this could be what is doing it to you. If this is the case, you might want to try re-booting into System 9 to work on the project and booting in OSX for other stuff.

Mon, May 21, 2007 - 12:22 PMI'd also set your AI scratch disk prefs to HD, not Startup. Be sure to restart the app for changes to take effect. -

I'll try changing the scratch disk settings.
If it's a RAM issue, that means I need to buy and install mre RAM, right? -

Re: Crashing when pasting - Help!
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 1:50 PMIf you are still crashing, let us know what version and platform you are using. CS, CS2, on Mac or Win and all that jazz. Also in the copy paste preferences there are options for what you actually are copying, whether it is AICB, PDF and all that. If you check in your preferences what is actually being copy and pasted, that would be helpful too! Good luck. I really love Illustrator, but it is a giant program since it handles vector and bitmap.
Good luck! -
